Toxic Positivity: Are you shining too bright?

by | Jul 4, 2024

In today’s business world, many leaders are enamoured with the concept of relentless positivity. πŸ’‘ But while a positive outlook has undeniable value, there’s a stark difference between using optimism to tackle challenges and using it to dismiss or avoid them. 🚫

The strength of workplace culture lies not just in celebrating our wins but in being able to openly discuss and address our challenges. πŸ—£οΈ A culture steeped in ‘Toxic Positivity’ risks creating an environment where employees feel unheard and unseen πŸ‘₯, where issues are glossed over, and the depth of our understanding is compromised.

This isn’t just about morale; it impacts our ability to devise effective solutions because the quality of our responses is contingent on how well we grasp the problems at hand. 🎯

In working with leaders, I teach them on how to facilitate psychological safety amongst their teams and organisation so that people feel secure to share grievances. Part of that is getting comfortable in uncomfortable situations, not taking things personally, and ultimately use their emotional intelligence. πŸ§ πŸ’œ

Leading with empathy, however, is not enough to engender trust. That has to be following through with accountability and actions that resolve for pressing problems. πŸš€

In my latest carousel post, I explore ‘Five Signs of Toxic Positivity in Your Workplace.’ πŸ” By recognizing these signs, we can foster a culture and commitment to hearing and speaking hard truths and where honesty and transparency are valued as much as optimism. πŸ’—

This isn’t a case against positivity, but rather an argument for balance. βš–οΈ

It’s a call to replace blind positivity with a nuanced understanding, one that values the insight that comes from challenges and the growth that can follow. 🌱

Swipe through the carousel ➑️ to learn more and contribute to this essential conversation about creating workplaces that build trust, promote open dialogue, and encourage holistic solutions. 🌐

1) Dismissal of Negative Emotions

“Always look on the bright side!” is not always the best response.

All emotions, including negative ones, are part of the human experience and need to be acknowledged, not dismissed.

2) Overemphasis on Positive Outcomes

Focusing solely on success can lead to fear of failure and an unrealistic approach to work. Sometimes, valuable lessons are hidden in our failures and setbacks.

3) Ignoring Constructive Criticism

A culture that only appreciates positivity can stifle constructive criticism, an essential tool for real innovation, growth and development.

4) Undervaluing Realistic Expectations

If your team feels pressure to always ‘go above and beyond’, you might be fostering an environment that devalues the importance of setting realistic, achievable goals.

5) Suppressing Employee Voices

If employees feel they can’t express concerns or difficulties for fear of being labeled ‘negative’, it’s a sign that toxic positivity has entered your workspace.

The Solution? Balance

Encourage positivity but also validate the expression of genuine emotions and concerns.

A balanced, empathetic, and authentic culture leads to a productive and satisfied workforce.

Create communication channels where people feel safe to voice “unpopular” opinions.

Get curious & ask your team questions to better understand the issues they face.

Encourage & model what honest and kind feedforward looks like.

Facilitate listening circles and/or heart check-ins to act as feedback loops.
